Benzoin is a resin that has been in use since ancient times, and it is typically called Styrax in older grimoires or texts on occultism. It is considered an amplifier, which means that it has the tendency of enhancing other ingredients irrespective of the purpose. Many use benzoin as an incense to set a meditative tone and to inspire creativity or focus.
*Some texts on the Goetia include Benzoin as a correspondence for Saturnian spirits. Others associate Benzoin with the Sun and Solar Chakra. Benzoin is also identified as the perfume corresponding to Netzasch, the Sephira of the Tree of Life associated with Venus. Elsewhere (particularly Thailand and Sumatra), it is associated with Venus for its romantic fragrance. We think the variety of species historically called by the name Styrax, as well as its amplifying qualities, may explain these diverse associations.
